Community Programme

Chinese dance plays a significant part in the arts scene in Singapore.  Singapore Chinese Dance Theatre (SCDT) aims to bring Chinese dance out of the theatre and into the community, so more people can get to experience and witness the beauty of this traditional art form.  Each year, SCDT organise two flagship community outreach programme, namely Under the BIG Tree and Chinese Dance Fiesta.

UNDER THE BIG TREE

Under The BIG Tree (UTBT) is an outdoor dance carnival that aims to attract new audiences, especially families with young children, by putting up family-friendly performances under a century-old tree, complete with Chinese dance-related fringe activities and “roadside” snacks.  Over the last five years, the event has expanded in scale and witnessed a steady growth in attendance.  SCDT was honoured to have invited the distinguished Guest of Honour, former president of Singapore, Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam, in 2017,  former president of Singapore, Madam Halimah Yacob in 2018, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong in 2019 and Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat in 2023.

CHINESE DANCE FIESTA

Chinese Dance Fiesta (CDF), a nationwide outreach programme, which aims to bring the Chinese dance communities together.  The event involves more than 180 performers from different schools and companies, and reaching out to more than 5,000 audiences annually.  SCDT has worked with several partners to bring Chinese dance all over Singapore, from the heartlands to the heart of the city. into their communities.

CDF began in 2015 and was co-organised with the National Arts Council (NAC).  Each year, the two-week is packed with free performances as well as workshops and masterclass, free for the general public. As we believe that everyone can enjoy and appreciate Chinese Dance.
