It is worth mentioning that the dance department of Northwest Minzu University began in 1951 and was officially established in July 2008. Its music and dance are key disciplines in Gansu Province. In addition, the Gansu Provincial Song and Dance Theatre, which created the classic dance drama Si Lu Hua Yu, was formerly known as the Northwest Minzu College Song and Dance Troupe.

Dunhuang dance is a distinctive art form that draws inspiration from the frescoes of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. Renowned for its graceful movements, elaborate hand gestures, and spiritual essence, Dunhuang dance vividly portrays celestial beings and Buddhist motifs. It stands as a remarkable example of cross-cultural fusion, integrating elements from both Chinese and Indian artistic traditions.
